Safety at the heart of sorting centers: Aktid’s commitment

Safety in waste sorting centers is a major concern for professionals in the sector. Aware of the sometimes challenging working conditions — including work at height, exposure to dust, temperature extremes, and pests — Aktid places the health and safety of its employees, subcontractors, and clients as an absolute priority.

A structured commitment to safety in sorting centers

In a rapidly evolving waste management sector, awareness of occupational risks is growing. Aktid has anticipated these challenges by creating a dedicated Safety Coordinator position to support all its projects. This in-house expertise allows the company to integrate risk prevention requirements right from the design phase of sorting centers — whether for new constructions or revamping (modernization) projects.

The regular presence of Aktid’s safety coordinator on construction, revamping, and maintenance sites ensures compliance with best practices, with the goal of preserving long-term occupational health.

A safety approach built on four pillars

Aktid’s safety policy for sorting centers is based on four key principles:

  • A collaborative approach: Aktid employees are fully involved in assessing risks related to their positions, monitoring safety action plans, and sharing best practices.

  • Individual and collective responsibility: everyone is responsible for their own safety and that of their colleagues, thereby strengthening risk awareness across teams.

  • Continuous training: transferring knowledge and best practices is a major driver for sustainably improving safety behaviors.

  • A culture of trust and open communication: ongoing dialogue between teams encourages feedback and contributes to the effectiveness of the overall safety approach.

High standards and rigor for all partners

This commitment extends beyond internal operations. Aktid applies the same high safety standards to all its partners:

  • All subcontractors are required to comply with our safety protocol.

  • Briefings are systematically held before every intervention.

  • Compliance with safety instructions is monitored directly on-site by our teams.

Through this rigor and professionalism, Aktid has earned recognition for its reliability and high safety standards across all its worksites.

Safety and performance: proactive prevention built into the design of sorting centers

At Aktid, safety is a true priority. It is integrated right from the design phase of sorting centers to ensure optimal operating conditions, in accordance with the nine general principles of prevention. These foundations enable us to design facilities that are safer, better adapted to real-world conditions, and built to last over time.

  • Avoiding risks: from the design phase onward, every piece of equipment is studied to ensure easy and safe access for maintenance, thereby reducing risks during operation.
  • Assessing risks: each work situation is analyzed to adapt the appropriate protective measures.
  • Eliminating risks at the source: all equipment is systematically fitted with disconnect switches. Dust extraction systems and noise-reducing components are also incorporated to ensure the safety of both operational and maintenance teams.
  • Adapting work to people: we understand the realities of on-site work (maintenance, manual sorting, etc.). That’s why we focus on improving workstation ergonomics and reducing physical strain. We also maintain constant regulatory monitoring to anticipate upcoming changes, particularly the European Machinery Regulation 2023/1230.
  • Keeping up with technical progress: we integrate the best innovations on the market, and when standard machines do not meet our requirements, we design our own equipment. Safety is a top priority in our design process. Our SB+ ballistic separator, for example, includes a dedicated “maintenance” position to ensure safe interventions.
  • Replacing dangerous elements: we always prioritize less harmful alternatives.
  • Planning prevention: safety is considered and integrated at every project stage — from design to construction, and through to operation.
  • Prioritizing collective protection: we systematically include safety devices directly in our equipment, favoring collective protections over individual ones.
  • Training and informing: the transmission of best practices is ensured at every step of the project — during design, on-site (including for subcontractors), at commissioning, and throughout operation by the client.

Safety and performance: a lasting commitment

At Aktid, we believe that industrial performance begins with a safe, healthy, and innovative working environment. By integrating safety into waste sorting centers at every stage — from design to construction and through to operation — we build facilities that are safer, more efficient, and better prepared to meet tomorrow’s challenges.
