Chambéry: New Packaging Materials Sorting Center

Chambéry: New Packaging Materials Sorting Center

Aktid appointed by Savoie Déchets for the design and construction of the new packaging materials sorting center.

Savoie Déchets, the inter-municipal waste management authority, has awarded the contract for the design and construction of the new packaging materials – Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to the consortium formed by AKTID, SW Architecture, Groupe Legendre, Inddigo, and Atossa.

Until recently, only metal, paper, cardboard, and plastic bottles and containers could be placed in the yellow bin. Other plastic packaging was disposed of with household waste.

Since January 1, 2023, following regulatory changes, all plastic packaging, including films and trays, can now be deposited in the yellow bin.

This evolution leads to both a higher volume of waste to be sorted and an increased diversity of material streams at the output of the sorting line.

The existing Chambéry sorting center, built nearly 30 years ago, could no longer be adapted to these changes — hence the launch of this new project.

The new facility will be more efficient, doubling the processing capacity of the current center, with 40,000 tonnes of waste sorted per year and 11 output streams, while maintaining a controlled and sustainable environmental footprint from design to operation.

The site will feature next-generation, energy-efficient equipment, rainwater recovery systems, and will be powered by renewable energy from the district heating network and photovoltaic solar panels. In addition, it will include a landscaped area of over one hectare.

Aktid is particularly proud to have won, as lead contractor, this local project in Chambéry, which required nearly 2,000 hours of design work from the pre-project teams since late 2021.

This new packaging materials – Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) will be commissioned in summer 2025, contributing to the ecological transition efforts of Savoie Déchets and its associated local authorities: Bugey-Sud, Sources du Lac d’Annecy, Syclum (Guiers and Morestel), and Sibrecsa (Bréda and Combe de Savoie).
