Aktid’s 2023 Review: An Exceptional Year

The year 2023 was marked by a series of successes for Aktid. Let’s look back at the highlights that made 2023 an exceptional year for the company, strengthening its position as a leader in the waste sorting plant industry.

Projects Awarded

2023 was marked by the award of several major projects, including one in which Aktid acts as lead contractor. In this role, Aktid will represent and coordinate all members of the consortium, while also ensuring administrative and financial management for the new selective collection sorting center in Chambéry.

A closer look at this “home-ground” project, with construction set to begin in 2024 and commissioning scheduled for summer 2025:

In Chambéry, the facility for Savoie Déchets, Intermunicipal Waste Treatment Authority, will significantly outperform the current sorting center, with a processing capacity twice as high — 40,000 tonnes of sorted waste per year and 11 output streams. Its environmental impact will be carefully controlled and optimized from design through to operation. The site will be equipped with next-generation, energy-efficient machinery, rainwater recovery systems, and will be powered by renewable energy through the district heating network and photovoltaic solar panels.

This year, Syndicat Mixte Decoset selected Aktid for the design and construction of the largest selective collection sorting center in France, operated by PAPREC GROUP, to be located in Bessières near Toulouse. Covering 10,000 m², the facility will be capable of processing more than 70,000 tonnes of waste per year from 152 surrounding municipalities, representing over one million inhabitants. This installation will also feature the latest Aktid innovations, ensuring the highest levels of performance in terms of throughput and material recovery rates.

These large-scale projects highlight the confidence placed in Aktid by local authorities and major players in the waste management market.

2023 Achievements

2023 saw the completion of 11 projects, including three unique Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) production units: Trivalandes, Guyot Environnement near Morlaix, and SYPROVAL. These facilities significantly reduce the landfilling of residual waste by recovering it as energy, thereby supporting regional energy independence through the substitution of fossil fuels with local, storable, and transportable energy sources.

At Trivalandes in Vendée, Aktid delivered an innovative SRF production facility processing rejects from Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT), particularly residual household waste. The plant is designed for an incoming flow of 50,000 tonnes per year, producing 15,000 tonnes of SRF supplied to cement plants within a 150 km radius, effectively halving landfill volumes.

Near Morlaix, Guyot Environnement entrusted Aktid with the design and construction of a modern, scalable installation. This 8,000 m² facility treats and recovers 65,000 tonnes of industrial waste per year, producing fuel for the 20 MW GUYOT Énergies boiler plant at the Port of Brest, which supplies heat to the industrial company Bunge.

In Malataverne (Drôme), SYPROVAL, operated by a subsidiary of Paprec Group on behalf of the Syndicat des Portes de Provence (SYPP), commissioned two lines sorting and recovering 110,000 tonnes of waste per year, dedicated to commercial and industrial waste (C&I) and residual household waste from the Drôme-Ardèche and Vaucluse regions.

Beyond SRF production, 2023 also marked the completion of three selective collection sorting centers:

In Parçay-Meslay near Tours (37), the new sorting center of SPL TRI VAL DE LOIR(E), operated by Coved (a subsidiary of Paprec Group), will sort 53,000 tonnes of household packaging per year for 900,000 inhabitants across three departments: Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher, and Sarthe.

In Alsace, the new sorting center in Richwiller processes 45,000 tonnes per year from the yellow bin collections of 800,000 inhabitants across parts of Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, and the Territoire de Belfort, replacing the now-saturated facility in Aspach-Michelbach.

Finally, in Firminy near Saint-Étienne (42), the new TriValLoire sorting center, operated by SUEZ and built in collaboration with several partners, will process 45,000 tonnes of household packaging per year for approximately 600,000 inhabitants.

Commercial and construction waste was also a strong focus in 2023, with several projects delivered — notably in Grenoble for Lely Environnement and near Ajaccio for Groupe Rocca — enabling the recovery of 40,000 tonnes per year of waste including metals, paper and cardboard, glass, textiles, wood, and plastics.

An Exceptional Year

2023 proved to be exceptional in many respects for Aktid. The company doubled its activity, increasing from €40 million in 2022 to €80 million in revenue in 2023, driven by the completion of 11 waste sorting facilities — including seven delivered simultaneously. Aktid also confirmed a strong future pipeline with the signing of around ten additional projects.

The year was also marked by the opening of Aktid’s capital to the French investment funds Initiative & Finance (“Tomorrow” fund) and Crédit Agricole des Savoie, supporting the company’s international expansion. This growth strategy materialized with the acquisition of Italproget, an Italian company specialized in waste sorting centers, bringing Aktid Group to nearly 200 employees.

Aktid’s success and development outlook were recognized in 2023, as the company ranked among the first 50 winners of the ETIncelles program, launched by the French Presidency to accelerate the transformation of high-growth SMEs into mid-sized enterprises (ETIs).

Aktid also received the Jury’s Special Award at the Trophées ECO Savoie Mont-Blanc ceremony, highlighting its commitment-driven corporate strategy, exceptional growth, and strong HR policy.

In terms of innovation, 2023 saw the launch of Smart Assistant, an intelligent tool that anticipates issues and provides real-time guidance to operators to prevent operational losses. This new solution further strengthens the Aktid Smart Solutions range, delivering powerful tools to enhance production quality, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency for sorting center operators.

In summary, 2023 was a year of both operational and strategic success, marked by outstanding achievements and significant growth. The projects secured, the innovations introduced, and the company’s international expansion further strengthened Aktid’s position as a leader in the waste sorting and management industry.

This exceptional year reflects Aktid’s ongoing commitment to excellence, innovation, and its ability to seize new growth opportunities.
